Benefits of Conscious Dental Sedation in Anchorage
A lot of patients experience great anxiety during their visit to the dental office. Surveys indicate that most people have some degree of fear of the dentist. It’s natural and normal. But some people have more fear than others. Because of this, many patients with severe phobias or extreme anxiety may postpone regular dental care, putting their oral health at risk. With Sedation Dentistry, or oral conscious sedation, Dr. Johnson and Dr. Kendall offer a safe and convenient way to deliver a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide with little to no memory of what was accomplished during the dental visit. You can rest assured that you will have the most relaxing and calming dental experience ever at Excellence in Dentistry in Anchorage, Alaska, which will result in regular dental visits and needed dental care.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation Dentistry, sometimes called “sleep dentistry”, does not actually cause unconsciousness. Instead, Dr. Johnson or Dr. Kendall will use their specialized training to prescribe oral sedatives for use before and during your visit, as needed. These sedatives will cause you to become extremely relaxed and calm, putting you into a state that helps to be less aware of your visit. This is a good way to eliminate all anxiety, stress, or fear so you can have your dental visit in comfort. No treatment is ever started until we are certain that you are in a sedated state: relaxed, comfortable, and ready.
Since our sedation dentistry involves oral medication, it will take a while to wear off. This is great for your dental visit, but requires that you have a responsible person who can help you get to your dental visit as well as stay with you afterward until the sedation has cleared your system.
We also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which is a more mild form of sedation. We can start it when you enter our office. It takes effect quickly and wears off quickly. With nitrous, you can drive yourself to and from your appointment.
A painless, calm, and relaxing way to perform your dental procedures—now that should put a smile on your face! However, if you have any additional questions regarding sedation dentistry, please feel free to contact us at Excellence in Dentistry for a complimentary meeting and we will be more than happy to talk to you and help remove remaining doubts or fears.
IV sedation is a different form of sedation that most dentists cannot offer. It requires additional training and equipment to perform. IV sedation works by introducing sedative drugs directly to your bloodstream. This offers many potential benefits, including:
- Allows for deeper levels of sedation
- Can work more quickly
- Precise control over your level of sedation
- Sedation can be extended as long as necessary for procedure
IV sedation lets us serve our patients that have need of deeper sedation, either because they have greater anxiety, have more trouble getting numb, or are getting a more complex oral surgery procedure. It also has the benefit of taking effect quickly, so we can get started with your treatment quickly. We also have more precise control over your level of sedation and can adjust it to fit your preferences. And we can extend sedation as necessary to make sure it lasts for your entire procedure.
Our Sedation Suite
In addition to medical treatments for sedation, we know that your surroundings are just as important. That’s why we’ve created a sedation suite, with multiple screen entertainment, to create a distracting, peaceful, and relaxing environment for our patients.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Yes! Sedation dentistry has been proven to be a very safe way to help calm dental anxiety. To help make sure your procedure is very safe, make sure you tell your sedation dentist about:
- Health conditions you may currently have
- Medication allergies
- Any medications or supplements you are currently taking
When describing your medications to your sedation dentist, don’t forget to mention any over-the-counter medications or supplements, too. We need to know about all medications and nutrients to make sure your procedure is safe–and that you get the full measure of sedation.
During IV sedation, you will be closely monitored for safety. We meet all requirements for training and equipment necessary to ensure your safety. You are in caring hands here.
Drug-Free Relaxation Dentistry with NuCalm
For people who have dental anxiety but want to try to overcome it without medications, we offer NuCalm. NuCalm uses neuroscience to leverage your body’s natural relaxation mechanisms. It can essentially turn off your body’s anxiety response so that instead of being nervous at the dentist, you slip into a near-sleep state like deep meditation.
NuCalm consists of four elements:
- GABA, a natural sleep hormone, delivered as a cream or chewable tablets
- CES (Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation), a gentle current that’s been used for over 50 years to treat anxiety and insomnia
- Neuroacoustic software uses your brain’s tendency to follow rhythms to induce relaxing brainwaves
- Eye mask blocks out bright lights and other visual stimuli
When these four elements are combined, they put your body into a state of rest and recovery. You don’t feel anxious. You float in a state like being at the edge of sleep. It only takes 5 minutes to take effect, and it works for 95% of people.
