Benefits of Conscious Dental Sedation in Anchorage
A lot of patients experience great anxiety during their visit to the dental office. Surveys indicate that most people have some degree of fear of the dentist. It’s natural and normal. But some people have more fear than others. Because of this, many patients with severe phobias or extreme anxiety may postpone regular dental care, putting their oral health at risk. With Sedation Dentistry, or oral conscious sedation, Dr. Johnson and Dr. Burke offer a safe and convenient way to deliver a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide with little to no memory of what was accomplished during the dental visit. You can rest assured that you will have the most relaxing and calming dental experience ever at Excellence in Dentistry in Anchorage, Alaska, which will result in regular dental visits and needed dental care.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation Dentistry, sometimes called “sleep dentistry”, does not actually cause unconsciousness. Instead, Dr. Johnson or Dr. Burke will use their specialized training to prescribe oral sedatives for use before and during your visit, as needed. These sedatives will cause you to become extremely relaxed and calm, putting you into a state that helps to be less aware of your visit. This is a good way to eliminate all anxiety, stress, or fear so you can have your dental visit in comfort. No treatment is ever started until we are certain that you are in a sedated state: relaxed, comfortable, and ready.
Since our sedation dentistry involves oral medication, it will take a while to wear off. This is great for your dental visit, but requires that you have a responsible person who can help you get to your dental visit as well as stay with you afterward until the sedation has cleared your system.
We also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which is a more mild form of sedation. We can start it when you enter our office. It takes effect quickly and wears off quickly. With nitrous, you can drive yourself to and from your appointment.
A painless, calm, and relaxing way to perform your dental procedures—now that should put a smile on your face! However, if you have any additional questions regarding sedation dentistry, please feel free to contact us at Excellence in Dentistry for a complimentary meeting and we will be more than happy to talk to you and help remove remaining doubts or fears.
Our Sedation Suite
In addition to medical treatments for sedation, we know that your surroundings are just as important. That’s why we’ve created a sedation suite, with multiple screen entertainment, to create a distracting, peaceful, and relaxing environment for our patients.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Yes! Sedation dentistry has been proven to be a very safe way to help calm dental anxiety. To help make sure your procedure is very safe, make sure you tell your sedation dentist about:
- Health conditions you may currently have
- Medication allergies
- Any medications or supplements you are currently taking
When describing your medications to your sedation dentist, don’t forget to mention any over-the-counter medications or supplements, too. We need to know about all medications and nutrients to make sure your procedure is safe--and that you get the full measure of sedation.
