What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry, sometimes called “sleep dentistry” does not actually cause unconsciousness. Rather, Dr. Kendall will prescribe oral sedatives, as needed, for use before and during your visit. These sedatives will cause you to become extremely relaxed and calm, putting you into a tranquil state that helps you to be less aware of your visit. This is a great way to eliminate anxiety, stress, or fear so you can have your dental visit in comfort. We never begin treatment until we are certain that you are in a sedated and comfortable state.
Since our sedation dentistry involves oral medication, it will take a while to wear off. While this is great for your dental visit, it will require that you have a responsible person who can help you get to your dental visit as well as stay with you afterward until the sedation has cleared your system.
We also offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, which is a much more mild form of sedation. We can start it at the beginning of your appointment as it takes effect quickly and wears off quickly. With nitrous, you can drive yourself to and from your appointment.
If you have any additional questions regarding sedation dentistry, please feel free to contact us at Excellence In Dentistry and we will be more than happy to talk to you and help remove any remaining doubts or fears you may have in regard to this incredible service.
Benefits of Conscious Sedation
Most people have some degree of anxiety associated with going to the dentist. And while it is natural and normal, some people have more fear than others. Because of this, many patients with severe phobias or extreme dental anxiety may postpone regular dental care, therefore, putting their oral health at risk. With sedation dentistry, or conscious sedation, Dr. Kendall offers a safe and convenient way to deliver a deeper level of sedation. You can rest assured that you will have the most relaxing and calming dental experience you have ever had at Excellence In Dentistry in Anchorage, Alaska, and as a result, you will receive the regular dental care you need to stay healthy for a lifetime.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is a different form of sedation than most dental offices can offer. It requires additional training and equipment to perform. IV sedation works by introducing sedative drugs directly into your bloodstream. This offers many benefits, including:
- A deeper level of sedation
- Can work more quickly
- Precise control over your level of sedation
- Can be extended as long as necessary for your procedure
IV sedation lets us provide a service for our patients that require a deeper form of sedation, either due to more extreme anxiety, an increased difficulty getting numb or are undergoing a more complex oral surgery procedure. It also has the benefit of taking effect faster so we can get started with your treatment more quickly. Because we also have more precise control over your level of sedation, the doctor can adjust it to fit your preferences and ensure it lasts for your entire appointment.
In addition to your dental treatment, we know that your environment is just as important. That is why we have created a sedation suite to create a peaceful and relaxing environment for you.
Is It Safe?
Yes! Sedation dentistry has been proven to be a very safe way to help calm dental anxiety. To increase the safety of your procedure, make sure you tell our Anchorage sedation dentist about:
- Health conditions you may currently have
- Medication allergies
- All medications or supplements you are currently taking
When describing your medications to your sedation dentist, don’t forget to mention any over-the-counter medications or supplements, too. We need to know about all medications and supplements to ensure your procedure is safe – and that you get the full measure.
During IV sedation, you will be continually monitored for safety. We meet all requirements for training and equipment necessary to ensure your safety. Rest assured, you are in caring hands here.
