When Chris first came to our Anchorage dental office, sitting in the exam chair was difficult. He was so anxious about treatment that he brought his wife for support and experienced panic attacks during appointments.
His dental health also made everyday life challenging. Many of his remaining teeth were severely broken or decayed, and he had multiple abscesses, bone loss, and a loss of bite height. Eating was difficult, and Chris felt embarrassed about his smile. He told our team that he sometimes felt people were afraid to talk to him because of how his teeth looked.
Building Trust Before Rebuilding His Smile
Chris also had other medical concerns that needed to be considered before and during his dental treatment. Dr. Kendall Skinner and our team coordinated with his other medical providers so we could plan his care with his safety and overall medical needs in mind.
Just as importantly, we worked at Chris’s pace. Earning his trust and helping him manage his dental anxiety were essential parts of a treatment journey that lasted nearly two years.
Chris travels about 350 miles to see us, making that trust especially meaningful.
A Full-Mouth Treatment Plan With Dental Implants
Chris needed extensive care to restore his mouth. We began by removing his remaining teeth under IV sedation. After the extraction sites healed, Dr. Skinner placed dental implants and allowed time for them to heal and integrate with the surrounding bone.
Once the implants were ready, we completed Chris’s full mouth reconstruction with All-on-X fixed implant-supported dentures. His treatment also restored his bite, addressing the loss of vertical dimension that had developed as his teeth deteriorated.
For patients with extensive tooth loss or failing teeth, dental implants can provide support for fixed full-arch restorations when appropriate.
A Smile Chris Is Ready to Share
Today, the difference extends beyond his new teeth. Chris can eat much more comfortably, smiles frequently, and feels more at ease around other people.
One comment has stayed with our team:
“People aren’t afraid of me anymore.”
Chris is also far more comfortable coming to our office. The patient who once struggled to sit in the chair no longer approaches his visits with the same fear.
For our team, that change in trust is every bit as meaningful as the physical transformation. We are proud to have supported Chris through each stage of a complex journey and to see him smiling and becoming more social again.
