Oral Conscious Sedation – Anchorage

Are you in need of dental care, but too afraid or anxious to go to the dentist? You are not alone. For our patients who need that extra help to relax, we offer oral conscious sedation dentistry.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry, or oral conscious sedation, is a safe and convenient way to deliver a deeper level of sedation than nitrous oxide with little or no memory of what was accomplished. It involves
the administration of sedative drugs to calm and relax a patient undergoing a procedure.

Trained dental professionals use sedation dentistry as a safe and effective way to eliminate the anxiety and fear some patients experience during a visit to the dentist.

Sedation Dentistry Benefits

Some patients experience great anxiety during their visit to the dental office. Patients with severe phobias or extreme anxiety may postpone regular dental care, putting their oral health at risk.

With sedation dentistry, patients can be assured of a calm, relaxed experience that results in regular dental visits and needed dental care.

How Oral Conscious Sedation Works

Sedation Dentistry, sometimes call “sleep dentistry,” does not actually cause unconsciousness. Instead, it causes a patient to become extremely relaxed and calm. Patients are usually given medication about an hour prior to their dental appointment. After the patient is in a sedated state, Dr. Johnson and his team perform the dental procedure.

It takes some time for the effects of the oral conscious sedation to wear off. Patients should ensure they have a responsible friend or family member who can drive them home and stay with them as needed following the procedure.

The Oral Conscious Sedation Experience

The purpose of sedation dentistry is to create an experience where the patient’s anxiety or fear is diminished. As a result, oral conscious sedation often allows a patient to not remember the details of his or her procedure.
